-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Evelyn Corsini:
Who are you hoping will attend PainWEEK 2008, and why are you focusing your efforts on this group? B. Eliot Cole, MD, MPA: We hope to attract the frontline provider, i.e., primary care clinicians, physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants, and pharmacists. These professionals are the people who actually provide the majority of care for those who are in pain in the United States. However, the faculty will be nationally and internationally recognized pain professionals, so that even the most experienced pain practitioners will find many sessions that are appropriate for their level of knowledge and experience. This is a meeting for all clinicians who are interested in pain.
EC: While we know that your entire conference schedule is not yet set, what 'highlights" can you tell us about now? BEC: We will be offering over 75 hours of curriculum at the conference. Among our offerings is the unique Pain Educators Forum. The goal of this forum is to educate pain clinicians on how to teach their peers, patients, and caregivers about pain management. We are also convening a "pre-conference" session on Wednesday, September 3, which will provide courses on Health Coaching, Hypnosis, and the Neuropharmacology of Opioids.
Urologic pain and obstetrical pain are two new areas that will be covered at the conference this year. They are important areas of pain management, but they are only rarely discussed at most pain conferences in any detail. A focus throughout the meeting will be on both rehabilitation and rheumatology. In my opinion, the highlight of the conference is the diversity of the timely and meaningful pain management education that we will provide.
EC: Who are faculty members who have already agreed to attend the conference? BEC: Just to name drop, some members of our distinguished multidisciplinary faculty members are the following: Charles Argoff, MD; Mark V. Boswell, MD; David Fishbain, MD; Robert J. Gatchel, PhD; James J. Giordano, PhD; Mary Lynn McPherson, PharmD; Andrea Rapkin, MD; Michael Schatman, PhD; David M. Simpson, MD; and Thomas B. Strouse, MD. We are still developing the program so we know there will be many others who will be joining us.
EC: Is there a specific date when registration will close? How can someone get their questions answered if they are interested in attending the conference? BEC: Registration is available online until approximately 8/15/08. After that, registration will occur onsite at the Red Rock Casino, Resort and Spa in Las Vegas, NV. Please refer to our website, www.painweek.org for registration details and commercial support information.
