The War on Pain , Scott Fishman, M.D. and Lisa Berger
Emil Chiauzzi, Ph.D.

What type of reader would benefit most from this book?
This book provides a general overview of the pain field for both laymen and professionals who are seeking to learn more about pain medicine. In layman’s terms, it offers an excellent overview of pain pathways and the neurological aspects of pain, with special attention to the relationship between the patient’s phenomenological experience and underlying physiological mechanisms. The authors offer a fascinating historical analysis of the development of anesthesia throughout the ages. They review the experience and treatment of pain with common conditions, such as back pain, shingles, arthritis, and headaches. The authors also devote time to reviewing non-pharmacological methods such as behavior therapy, acupuncture, and hypnosis. Overall, "The War on Pain" presents a balanced review and discussion for those seeking to understand the mysteries of pain.

How would you recommend a patient use this book to enhance their care?
I would highly recommend this book to patients seeking treatment for acute or chronic pain. It is critical to offer patients an understanding, balanced review of the options and to explain the complex link between the physiological and phenomenological aspects of pain. "The War on Pain" clearly outlines options with an eye toward up to date empirical findings.

Are there any features or sections of the book you liked most or least?
The presentation of the historical development of anesthesia was fascinating. The authors also reviewed the placebo response in a way that emphasized the power of the mind and individual differences in coping with pain. The book also includes a list of pain centers and websites, as well as a glossary that is especially helpful for the uninitiated.
